My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know! The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!"-Dr. Seuss. As a kindergarten teacher, I am the first example to many of my students of what a good reader looks like and sounds like. I strive to live this quote everyday amongst my students.

The school that I teach at is one of the lowest performing schools in the district.

In my classroom, I have the privilege of teaching 20 enthusiastic and energetic six year olds. My students come from poverty stricken homes, where what they face is more than they should have to. However, each and every day my students come through the door with a smile, ready to start their day and learn something new. I admire the fact that most of them don’t let what happens at home get them down. They try their best every day to come in excited about the day ahead. As a teacher, one of my goals every year is to expose my students to learning experiences that they may not experience outside of school. Often times, my classroom is the most steady thing for my students, they can know that they can count on Mrs. Thompson being there and supporting them everyday.

My Project

The resources requested will be used to support how important reading is in everything that we do. In order to make sure that they are reading just right books with confidence, my students will use the leveled books to read both at home and in the classroom to themselves and their peers. Finding books to use in guided reading is a struggle, because our current bookroom is very limited and scarce. The guided reading books will be used to expose my students to nonfiction texts in a guided setting, where together we explore reading strategies and skills that we can use to become better readers. The Hot Dot Readers and Activity Books will allow my students to experience and practice their basic reading skills in a digital format. During center time, my students Get Ready, Get Set and Read, they know that everything that we do during this time is to help us become better readers. Providing them with these resources will create a print rich environment for them to thrive and grow in.

Reading is Fundamental, and in essence reading should be FUN.

The same experiences that I had when I learned how to read, I would like my students to have those same experiences in a loving and nurturing environment. I not only want all of my students to leave my class with a love for reading but I also want them to be able to think critically about what they read. Donations to this project will allow my students to grow as readers and experience the joy of reading in different ways.
