This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The 2021-2022 school year is a new experience for my incoming 9th graders, as well as my 11th graders. After over a year of learning remotely, my students are thrilled to be back in a school building! I co-teach over 150 New York City students who are curious, excited, and nervous about what this school year will bring.
Over half of my students have Individualized Education Plans, meaning they have a wide range of special needs which require additional support.
As we delve into the school year, I am excited to see my students in person every day and begin this journey together.
My Project
As my ninth and eleventh grade students have returned to the physical classroom, it has been wonderful to interact with them face-to-face and not just through a screen.
It is wonderful to watch as students open up physical books with wonder and expectation.
We read every day as a class, but I also encourage my students to read independently. Many of my students are reading below grade level and may struggle to readily engage with a new book. This is why I am working on building my classroom library with high-interest and multi-leveled books.
As most of my students are also fashion and art students and prove to be strong visual learners, I am focusing on acquiring more graphic novels. The union of literature and art truly captured my students' attention and imagination. A good graphic novel is a perfect hook to pull my students into becoming lifelong readers!
