Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach students with special needs and in grades 3 and 4. My students have disabilities like Autism and Mental Retardation. I am at a new school and because I am a brand new teacher I still need so many different supplies to get my class to where I know it could be.

My students come from a low income very poor area. Our school is title one and because the school is new, the supplies are very limited. My students have many social deficits and are behind on many skills. They need the best opportunity possible to make it in the world safely with skills to offer.

My students learn very well by using modified books. These modified books teach them how to read, how to be on task for a while, and how to interact with others in and out of public. We make these books to fit the needs of each student. Some students learn by looking at pictures, some can read simple texts and others do well with more complicated texts. Because it is very hard to find texts that are modified to fit the needs of very different individuals, we must modify each texts 3-5 different ways so that the students get something important from it. After we laminate the texts we need to bind them to keep them together. My students need the portable DVD because I am doing my masters project on Video Modeling which is one of the best ways for a child to learn how to socialize which is very important to kids with special needs. This is backed by a lot of data, and I would love to implement this strategy in my room permanently.
