My Students

Our classroom has a revolving door! I work with individuals and groups of 2-3 students at a time. All of my students receive specialized academic instruction for decoding, reading fluency, comprehension, writing fluency, and foundational math skills. We also work through developing social pragmatics and self-regulation skills so they can be more successful interacting with peers on their own.

Our classroom culture is based on John Hattie's 8 mindframes, from the way we organize the furniture to how we work through difficulties using "the power of YET" and "grit" when concepts do not come easily.

Over a dozen students come through this classroom daily. It is a safe place where they can relax, work at their instructional levels, and build foundational skills to access grade level objectives. They experience success in their goals and build grit from all their hard work.

My Project

All of the students in my class have exceptional needs ranging from Autism to ADHD. They greatly benefit from intentional sensory input (also known as "heavy work") and even have scheduled sensory breaks to help their "engines" stay in balance.

While working at the table group, my students have increased their stamina and focus for writing tasks when using Zuma rockers.

These tremendous chairs keep students' need to wiggle confined to their personal zones without disrupting others around them. They provide discrete low, slow sensory input and allow the group plan to effectively carry on.

We currently have two Zuma rockers, but the students outnumber the chairs and have to take turns. If we could complete the table set with two more, the entire group would have "sameness" and "fairness."
