This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the year, I want my students to say, "This was the best year in math, ever!" My students deserve the best math education I can give them and I desire to be able to provide a mathematical education that will encourage my students to reach for the stars!

Our students come from economically challenged environments.

My students are in a fifth-grade Math and Science classroom at a Title I school in the Washington Heights neighborhood of upper NYC. Ninety-four percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and 30% are English Language Learners. Like most children, my students love having hands-on experiences and I want ALL of my students to be able to have access to their own personal learning needs!

My Project

Currently, when conducting small group work with my students, we sit crowded around a group of desks. These places are uncomfortable and students get easily distracted in these spots. We use a workshop model approach to math and small group work is the highlight of the day. This is the time for students to receive individualized attention, and to work closely with the teacher.

Small group work is the key to each student's success, especially when they can easily see and hear the teacher, and vice versa!

Sitting at a group table works like magic! Because the teacher is sitting in the middle and is close to each student, the children feel closely connected to the teacher and to one another, and are more apt to stay engaged in the work at hand. Working at this group table allows the teacher to quickly scan each student's work and to provide immediate instruction. It is common to hear "Why do we have to stop working with you already?" at the end of each group session. If we had a group table, the students would want to stay there the entire day!

Please help me create this magic learning space for my eager and deserving students!
