Our school is in a borough of New York City. We are a Pre-K through 8th-grade school. Our students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures. We definitely represent the diversity of New York City. Some of our students are English Language Learners, some have special needs. Some of our students come from military families.
Our school motto is: "We are more than a school, we are a family."
I am so proud to work in this building!
My Project
My students need Home Depot items for our school community garden which grows vegetables for our local food pantry! Recent storms have ruined a lot of our school garden! Our school community garden has many participants throughout the school day, and even after school! Many programs that include our students, such as after-school programs and a girl scout troop also help maintain our vegetable garden.
Gardening is a great way for students to learn about environmental science and help the hungry in our community!
Many aspects of science are interwoven throughout the gardening experience. Students are able to talk about soil, various garden creatures, and the Earth's water cycle.
The students in my school take turns helping out in our garden. Everyone participates! When vegetables are ready, they are picked and brought to our local food pantry!
