My Students
I teach a 6th grade Language Arts/History core class on the west end of Alameda, California. Of all of the schools in which I have worked over the past 20 years, this is truly the most diverse. We are a Title I qualifying school, with students from all walks of life. About half of our students are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged, and we serve one of the Bay Area's largest communities of homeless/transitional families; these kids sit side by side with the children of tech industry professionals with million-dollar Alameda homes. There is no ethnic or racial majority at our school - every classroom is a reflection of our close-knit, multi-cultural community.
My Project
On a typical day, my classroom has become a lunchtime refuge for anywhere from ten to thirty of our middle school students. The room is especially busy on rainy days. This past Monday I looked around at the two dozen kids in the room and noticed that every one of them was staring at their phones or other devices. While they're sitting together, there was very little social interaction.
My hope is to provide our middle schoolers with pro-social, lunchtime alternatives to their phones.
I want to start a shelf of card games and board games that they can play together. I passed around a paper to the kids in the room, and they came up with a long list of games they like to play. Some were classics, like Uno, chess, and checkers, and others I'd never heard of.
