My Students
Our classroom is a place where students strive for excellence and embrace the many learning opportunities that come their way. Located in Kailua, on the island of Oahu, our school serves approximately 370 students from Pre-School to Grade 6. Many of our students come from Kailua or attend on a Geographic Exception from the nearby city of Waimanalo. We have the best students around! I have the privilege of teaching 55 of them this school year. I hope to serve not just as their teacher, but hope to inspire them and coach them in pursuit of their goals. The students in my ELA courses love to read and write! They love to conduct research on topics of interest and create products that demonstrate their learning. The students in my Math courses love to be challenged mathematically and enjoy solving complex problems.
One reason why I enjoyed being in this class was it was full of friendships and laughter.
We are indeed a learning community! Our faculty is not just committed to academic excellence, but are also committed to providing experiences for students to explore their interests, work on interpersonal and collaboration skills, remain engaged and challenged, and pursue their goals!
My Project
When you walk into our classroom, you may notice that students are usually sitting in a circle where they can see all of their peers' faces and all of the students are engaged in whole-class learning and discussions. Then students break up to engage in work with small groups and pairs. You may also notice that students are not assigned seats. They have the power to choose where they want to sit, choosing the seat that will help them learn best. These are much like the choices that we need to make as adults. A few months ago, I was asked to pilot a small version of flexible seating which included Wobble Chairs.
In the weeks that followed, many of our students needed reminders to walk to class because they were rushing to get into our classroom to use these chairs!
They love sitting in these innovative chairs and they would love the addition of a few more Wobble Chairs to our classroom seating options. Additionally, our students would love to try out Desk Cycles!
Wobble Chairs allow students to get some of their energy out by moving around while seated. Desk Cycles also allow students to get some of their energy out and allow them to get a little bit of exercise in while completing their work. With both wobble chairs and desk cycles, the students will be even happier and ultimately more productive in their learning! These tools will help our students to stay motivated and "active" in their learning!
