My students need an engaging and large classroom library filled with 32 current titles, such as "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,""Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie," and "A Tale Dark & Grimm," that will help foster a love for reading.
Help my students get lost and found! My students need to experience firsthand that they can both lose themselves, as well as find themselves, in great books. I have seen many students who like reading, but are not able to easily access great books.
Being a teacher in a Title 1 school, I see several different types of students.
A small number of my students have a love for reading, and are able to access books. Many of my students have the desire to read, but do not have easy access to engaging books due to financial struggles within their family. And still other students have never developed a love of reading and view reading as a chore. This is where you can help.
My Project
In an effort to instill in my students a love of reading, I will be immersing them in a literature-rich environment. While there is much research that shows that high-volume reading has significant impacts on students scores on standardized tests, the chief goal that informs every aspect of my instruction is to create students who have a love for learning. Finding the right books for students and giving them the freedom to choose the books that they want to read is an excellent way to accomplish this goal. Through this grant, students will have easy access to a number of high-interest books that they can choose from. Giving the students the choice as to what they read will insure that they open the book viewing it as their choice and not a teacher mandate. In order to meet both the interest and ability levels of an entire classroom of students, my classroom library must be extensive. This grant will help make that possible.
As you consider giving to this project, think back to when you were in school.
Was reading a chore, or a joy? For many of my students, reading has become synonymous with work and therefore a chore. With your help, my students can be freed from the "required reading lists" and have the freedom to explore books that they want to read and kindle, or re-kindle, a love of reading.
