My Students

Our classroom sorey needs some organization! The students' desks are overflowing with books, papers, and folders. We have inadequate storage for our math aids and could certainly use better bins for our books. I need help organizing our Read Aloud books so that I can find them easily.

My students are responsible, enthusiastic learners and they deserve a clean, well organized room environment.

I have a wide variety of ability levels and must keep on hand tools, visual aids, timers, and small white boards. My students know our daily routine but still waste precious instructional minutes accessing the materials they need. We are an International Baccalaureate school with many second language learners, mainstreamed special education students, and gifted students. We are a Title 1, inner city school. We have a lot to do each day to meet state standards, teach IB curriculum, and include English Language Development lessons. To get the most from our time together, my students and I need a classroom that is organized and accessible.

My Project

The bookshelf where we keep our math tools is falling apart. (It did serve us well for many years.) We would like to use the Cubby Storage Unit instead. The bins will make finding what we need fast and easy! The Reading and Writing Storage Unit will be a welcome change from the tattered Ziploc bags we've been using for our Independent Reading books. The boxes will make it easy for us to find our books quickly and will help keep our books in good condition. The top half of the unit will make a much better house for our Writing Folders and projects. The corner shelf and binders will be used for student portfolios. The Help Yourself book boxes are for the new IB section in our classroom library. The books that we read for each unit will remain organized and accessible. The Sort and Store bins are for me to organize books so I can find them when planning lessons. I keep requesting shelves but the district has yet to help me.

My students and I do the best we can with what we have, but if you can help me better organize our classroom we will be able to be more efficient and more productive.

The wasted time transitioning from one activity to the next is largely due to our room environment. My class is smart, motivated, and well-behaved. They deserve to have an organized classroom and I wish I could afford to provide them with one. Please, help me get it together!
