My Students
The more you read, the better you become. I am a true believer of this! A lot of students these days are more interested in video games than reading books.
I have a diverse group of students, most of whom are from economically disadvantaged homes and therefore lacking many of the resources that are afforded to students in affluent schools. In order to motivate my students I have purchased a variety of books and other educational materials for my classroom. However I believe that my students would benefit from adding graphic novels to our classroom library.
My Project
Have you seen a student so involved in a book that they can't put it down? It makes a teacher's heart smile when they see this. These books, such as the boxcar children set, and the Nancy Drew Hardy Boys that will be donated to my classroom are in such high interest to students today, that our school librarian can't keep them on the shelves! Not only do graphic novels appeal to the students because of their colorful pictures, but also because of their great story lines. These books will encourage reluctant readers to develop interest in reading materials. Moreover, the graphical nature of these books will increase comprehension in students who have difficulty in reading. I plan to integrate these books into students' independent reading activities and will allow them to check out these books, as I currently do with my own personal classroom library.
Reading is the key that can unlock many doors in a student's future. If I can add yet another dimension to the efforts that I currently make within my classroom, I believe that my reading program will significantly impact my students' progress and help them to develop the true love of reading that I myself have gained over the years.
