Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are Middle School students in a low poverty area that mainly have Spanish speaking families. We are trying to raise their reading/writing capabilities on a daily basis. We have our students practice reading out-loud and in groups also they highlight keywords or phrases that stand out. They also write summaries so they could become more comfortable putting thoughts into paper.
The problem is that the student selection at the school library is extremely limited and does not catch the students attention.
Because of this some students are hesitant about checking books out that they will not read.
My Project
My project will definitely improve the reading/writing capabilities of my students, it will also better prepare them for next year when they are expected to read at a higher level. With the books ordered i believe my students will get hooked on any book they pick up. The school library does not have the biggest selection, so having a wider variety of books to pick from will make reading a more enjoyable experience.
Reading in middle school is like pulling teeth.
We know this to be true, but if the students have more options to choose from reading will become more of a hobby than a chore.
