I teach elementary music in a Title I School in Jefferson City. My students are vibrant young performers with so much personality! My students love to show off their talents for their peers and community. They have delved into writing their own blues music, creating improvised xylophone pieces in small groups, as well as beginning an upper elementary choir.
These students are funny, musical, talented children who deserve a chance to showcase their skills.
Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of my students come from impoverished families, so often their only chance to experience instruments is at school. And, like children all over the world, they love to get their hands on instruments, and play with such joy and enthusiasm whenever they get a chance!
My Project
Currently, my classroom only has three ukuleles available for student use. A classroom set of ukuleles would allow for all students to be actively engaged the entire time. When the students have had the opportunity to play the ukuleles, they have demonstrated great enthusiasm as well as cooperation. They love to help teach each other and demonstrate the skills they have learned. While they have loved the ukuleles we have, sharing the ukuleles among 15-20 students means that the time each student has to play is very limited. Having a full classroom set would allow my students to increase their engagement and deepen their learning exponentially. We would love to be able to perform with them and share their enthusiasm and skills with the community.
