This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My wonderful students come from the neighborhood around the school and are a delight to teach. We are a Title I school, and the boys and girls represent a diverse population. I love my position as the school librarian and enjoy seeing the classes once per week. I have worked with my students do more research on science and STEM based topics. We have been using the online Encyclopedia Britannica and online World Book Encyclopedia to gather information. We have limited technology in our library. It takes three to four weeks to get every student a turn at the computer to do our research activities.
My students need a new set of tablets to conduct STEM research.
We add a little more to our science research each year. The more technology we have available for our students...the more they will learn.
My Project
I teach kindergarten to 5th grade in a high poverty, inner city school district. Our school has a nice library that the students love to visit. We devote time during our library visits to do research. I incorporate a segment of our class each week to science and STEM research. Also, the children love when we visit websites that have live cameras that track animals. This year we are focusing on STEM online research projects.
My students need a new set of tablets to work on their STEM online research projects.
The students asked if the school could buy new tablets, but I explained about budget cuts. In this situation, not having enough updated technology takes time away from our research activities and does not allow us to use our time together wisely.
Research skills are important to my students and lifelong learning takes place in our library daily. The students' idea of buying a new set of tablets would allow us to get more STEM research projects done. A donation to our project would excite the children because they could continue to search the online resources to find more information about weather, space, and the environment.
