My Students
Interacting with a book used to mean turning the page. Now it means so much more. The text can be read to you; you can search an embedded dictionary; illustrations even come to life now!!! All thanks to an amazing piece of technology known as an E-Reader and one of the best - a Nook.
I am an intervention teacher of 4th and 5th grade students.
My class is comprised of a diverse group of learners, who are eager to absorb as much as they can while in the classroom. Some find it a little harder than others, and some are reluctant readers and avoid a good book at all costs. However, I recently discovered that an E-Reader has caught their attention. In fact, anything that has an on/off switch catches their attention these days, as evidenced by the use of my SmartBoard, which appears to keep them far more engaged during instructional time.
My Project
An e-reader has the ability to grab a child's attention the way a "plain, old book" doesn't. The Nook allows the reader to interact with the story; reads the story to them if they want; enables them to find meanings of words with the embedded dictionary; even some illustrations come to life; there are interactive activities built in to some books that help build a child's comprehension and more importantly their desire to read more. My students need that excitement and engagement, encouraging them to open their minds to a whole new world of discovery and exploration every day.
