This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Real-world experience is essential in the special education classroom. Once a year, students receiving special education services participate in a Donut Shop Project Based Learning (PBL). The Donut Shop allows students to get creative in designing their donuts; stick to a budget; sell their donuts; and shop at their peers' shops, or as we like to call it supporting local businesses.

The Donut Shop PBL has proven to increase students' academic and social engagement.

By donating to this project, you will help further extend this project. We hope to extend our Donut Shop project by making our own air-dry clay. This will add a measuring component to our project as we will be following a recipe to get the perfect "dough" texture. Students will then decorate and sell their donuts to staff and peers. Everyone participating is given donut dollars.

A little insight into what our project looks like

our class will be making their own donut dough. We will use measuring spoons and cups to add the perfect amount of corn starch, baby oil, and lemon juice to our dough. We will be cooking the dough in a microwave and will use spatulas to mix the dough while it cools. Once cooled, students will knead the dough on the plastic mats until they get a smooth consistency. They will form the donuts and let them dry. The fun begins when students paint and decorate their donuts using sprinkles and glitter (or anything we have around the classroom) before our grand opening.

The already-made clay is to be able to make more than our little hands can knead! We have also seen extended illnesses and would hate to have students miss out if they need to stay home to get better.
