Students thrive in well structured, professional environments where they fell supported, respected, and cared about. My goal daily is to provide a stimulating, multiple learning style environment where students are inspired to identify their inner strengths and abilities. Through self-discovery, inspiration begins!
They long to learn and be engaged in their education and the world around them.
They inspire themselves, each other, and myself daily by their level of passion and love for learning! To best meet the needs of each type of learner, I believe that flexible seating would help support each and every student. We talk about how in a week, we spend more awake hours in our classroom than at our own homes. With that, we desire to allow appropriate mobility for students of all learning styles. I would never be able to sit in those uncomfortable plastic chairs all day long, and learn. Please help me make them feel more comfortable, so that they can focus on learning, and not that their bottom hurts from sitting all day.
My Project
Flexible seating will allow our students to take charge of their learning. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, our students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, at our stand up desks, or sitting or lying on the floor with a clipboard. I have found that when students are able to be mobile around the classroom and get comfortable, they enter into their task in a different way. They take ownership of it because they were able to make a choice.
Movement allows for the brain to connect differently than when it is in a place of rest.
These seating options will provide avenues to help keep our students engaged in a new way and enhance the individual learner and styles in our classroom. It is believed that when students choose their path, they are more successful and confident as they have a collective buy-in to the outcome they are producing.
Moshe Feldenkrais once said, “I believe that the unity of mind and body is an objective reality. They are not just parts somehow related to each other, but an inseparable whole while functioning. A brain without a body could not think … the muscles themselves are part and parcel of our higher functions.”
