Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a Title 1 school in Southern California, where 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students face many obstacles in their lives, such as poverty and crime. But despite these issues, they come to school every day, ready to learn.
My students are enthusiastic learners, who love to read, write, and learn new things.
I want to encourage their enthusiasm and provide them with a safe, nurturing environment where they will persevere and feel successful.
My Project
The best way to improve a student's reading is to actually read books. So every Monday my students go to our classroom library to pick books they want to read and are at their reading level. Then throughout the week, they get about 20 minutes each day to read independently, where they take out their books and read to themselves.
The bean bag chairs and soft seats will make our classroom library an enticing, comfortable place to sit and read a good book.
Making a cozy place for my students to read will encourage them to read more and in turn will improve their reading skills.
