This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We have been able to encourage our students to read more, but there is still a low interest for reading nonfiction. I have been able to select a nonfiction novel I strongly believe will be of high interest to my students. I have planned a rigorous, fun unit and now all we need are the novels..
We are a small urban district in Ohio.
Our students come from high poverty area and often lack the necessary tools to be successful. We are about 80 percent African-American and 70 percent free and reduced lunch. At our school we are committed to teaching our students to take PRIDE in everything they do.
My Project
The set of nonfiction books will assist me in taking the necessary special measures to make sure my students are reading nonfiction. The new common core standards place an emphasis on factual, informational reading. Furthermore, students have more motivation to read when they are comfortable. The mats will allow students to sit together as a group or individually and dive into the novel. Students will not be restricted to reading at their desk, but will have the opportunity to read indoors and outdoors comfortably.
These novels will allow me to improve my students reading, comprehension and complex thinking skills.
In light of the recent movie on Jackie Robinson's life, I am positive this novel will be of high interest to my students.
