Get a Grip on Code: Using Handheld Joystick Controllers

My Project

In Computer Science students will learn the foundations of coding through block-based programming. One of the culminating projects involves designing and building their own simple video games. However, the current limitations of keyboard-only play restrict how students can interact with what they’ve created.

Adding handheld joystick controllers would provide students with an authentic gaming experience and a more tangible understanding of user interface design, input/output systems, and hardware-software integration.

These tools are especially valuable for kinesthetic learners and can bridge the gap between code and physical interaction in a way that keyboards cannot. This project aims to deepen engagement, encourage hands-on learning, and foster real-world application of coding skills in a dynamic, interactive environment.
