My Students
Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC; where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced priced lunches and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, 6 of my 15 kindergarten students have Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) addressing their various needs (ie., developmental delays, speech and language impairments, autism, and/or behavior challenges).
Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading or mathematics, or in both areas.
It should be noted, however, that all of my students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new; and have shown so much growth and potential for excellence since their very first day of school back in August, which seems so long ago!
My Project
My kindergarten classroom needs Clorox Wipes, Kleenex Tissues, and Purell Hand Sanitizer. My kindergarten students eat breakfast, lunch, and a snack in our classroom. That being the case, student tables, counters, and other surfaces are being wiped down continuously. Clorox Wipes are desperately needed. In addition, runny noses require Kleenex Tissues; and dirty hands frequently require hand sanitizer to help fight our ongoing battle with germs.
In my kindergarten classroom, I frequently stress to my students that cleanliness is next to the advancement to first grade!
That being the case, in order to foster independence, my students are encouraged to blow their own noses with Kleenex Tissues; and then pump and rub a small drop of hand sanitizer onto their hands. In addition, hand sanitizer is used after bathroom visits; and before and after meals. Needless to say, our kindergarten classroom goes thru Clorox Wipes, Kleenex Tissues, and hand sanitizer just like hot cakes!
Keep in mind, our daily battles to "defeat the dreaded germs" occur during the course of any school day, but our main focus continues to be on instruction. However, basic student needs must be addressed in order for our students to access the general education curriculum. Research has shown that students thrive in a learning environment when their needs (cleanliness) are being addressed. Your generous donation to our kindergarten classroom is most appreciated.
