Germs Are Not for Sharing

My Project

Some of the students in my self contained Special Education classroom have significant speech and language delays as well as oral motor slackness. When my students feel unwell, they cannot alert us to their needs or discomfort. This is more evident than ever when the sniffles from Spring colds and allergies become common. The classroom staff is desperately trying to keep the classroom clean, but the students' constant sneezing and coughing paired with my students physical and developmental inabilities to cover their coughs is creating workspaces that are not sanitary.

Students who are sick have a harder time learning and some of my students are already playing catch up because of their Autism; keeping a germ free classroom can ensure that they have a hygienic work space, learn self care skills and can maintain the attendance that is necessary to be successful in school.

Tissues and sanitizing wipes are an integral part of keeping a classroom clean, yet these items are not supplied by the NYC Department of Education.

My school is considered a Title I school, which means the students are of the highest level of need. Many of my students students receive multiple Related Therapies: Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Counseling services.
