"Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood" - Mr. Rogers
My room is full of energetic first graders who are eager mathematicians!
They are practicing math foundations everyday and learning to be problem solvers.
Our school is in an urban environment, with a tremendous school and neighborhood community. Our staff, administrators, parents, and community members work together to provide the best education possible to our hard working and dedicated students.
My Project
Our final math unit of the year is about geometry. On our math pages, geometry can be flat and boring. I am looking for a way to bring geometry to life with these fun hands on games. I am requesting a set of board games and brain teasers for my students. The game Blokus is a great way for kids to manipulate shapes. The Rush Hour games will help my students see how shapes connect with each other and can be moved around to make new shapes and pathways. The other games are brain teasers and tangrams to help students take what they know about shapes to make new ones. I believe that beyond learning the names of shapes and how many sides they each have, geometry is really learning about spatial awareness and how shapes can go together. These games play on a variety of skills that will allow my students to learn how to manipulate shapes and space while having a ton of fun!
Mr. Rogers said it best.
Play is the work of childhood. This project will allow geometry to leap off our math pages and become tangible. My kids will be practicing the skills we are learning in geometry in a fun and hands on way!
