Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach math and science to a wonderful group of culturally diverse 4th graders. We are a Magnet School for Engineering and located in a high-poverty area. My class is centered around active learning, which involves hands-on lessons and group activities.
The students come from low-income families, which places obstacles in their path. It is my job to remove some of those obstacles by providing them with the best possible education. We talk about college and the importance of education regularly in my classroom. My students are excited to learn. They regularly tell me that before my class they didn't like math, but now it is their favorite subject. I know that with the proper foundation they can succeed in everything they do.
Geometry is one of the most difficult subjects to grasp when you aren't able to manipulative the objects. I don't feel that worksheets or a textbook can properly teach students what angles are or what faces, vertices, and edges feel like. My classroom is desperately in need of geometry manipulatives and centers to help engage their minds. I need protractors for creating angles, symmetry mirrors to understand equality in shapes, 2-dimensional and 3 dimensional objects to feel and manipulate, and problem solving activities.
Your support would greatly impact my students lives and future. You will make it possible for my students to understand a challenging concept. Building the foundation now will help them succeed in their educational career. We have a motto at our school, "If you can dream it, you can build it." I have a dream of educating tomorrow's leaders, please consider helping me build that dream.
