Geometry and Me: Integrating S.T.E.A.M Into Elementary Education

Help me give my students access to digital tools that will promote 21st century learning by turning the abstract concept of geometry into a concrete opportunity.

My Students

Imagine a scholar attending school for the past seven years and, when you ask them what they enjoy most about school, their reply is recess, lunch, or P.E. Fast forward three months into the school year, as you're transitioning to the bus lot for dismissal, that same scholar gives you the most sincere hug and states "Ms. McMillan, I love math!" Seeing the glimmer in their eyes when they've experienced that "ah-ha" moment for the first time is the driving force behind why I continue to choose this profession.

I am a twelfth-year educator serving students within the Title I public school sector, in which I currently teach fifth-grade math and science.

Although 95% of the students receive free lunch and live in impoverished neighborhoods, their determination and tenacity to rise above unfavorable circumstances are astonishing. Please consider helping my students continue their journey of success in the world of STEM and STEAM by assisting me in the funding of educational materials, supplies, and experiences.

My Project

Although the pandemic is still looming with no clear sense of what lies ahead, the mission to impact, empower and inspire continues. This digital device will help ensure I'm capable of integrating STEM into the daily instruction of my elementary math classroom through the use of 3-D printing. Geometry is usually an abstract standard that is more difficult to grasp. This device is compatible to the software needed to link to our classroom's 3-D printer and will enable scholars to create their own shapes and then work to find the radius, diameter, and circumference of three-dimensional figures. They will also be able to develop QR codes through the reader on their iPad devices to share their findings and work samples in a touchless manner. This will promote student discourse and increase levels of engagement. My goal is to promote career and college readiness by ensuring scholars are equipped with the tools needed to compete with their more affluent counterparts. What better way to do this, than to expose them to technology with an integrated and hands-on approach? This digital tool will ensure the learning taking place is developmentally appropriate, engaging, rigorous, and safe as this tech tool will help to mitigate the spread of germs through the implementation of a touch-less system.
