The students of the Science in the Community Club at Robeson High School are asking for your assistance! We are a club of 20, funded by After School Matters, that meets twice a week to explore the applications of science occurring in the Chicago area. After School Matters provides us with a modest budget to fund short trips around our city each week, which we are extremely grateful for. But our dream is to explore settings outside our city as well. Robeson serves a low income community and many of our students have never left Chicago, let alone the state. We want them to be able to experience the study of geology, not just read about it in their textbooks. That's where you come in! We would like to take a trip to the Cave of the Mounds, an immense cavern just outside Madison, in late March. Many of our club members are studying the processes of chemical and mechanical weathering in their environmental science class this year. This trip would give them the opportunity to see the processes that shaped our earth with their very own eyes. The students would receive a tour of the cave, then have the opportunity to map the formation of the cave and sleuth for mineral and rock samples. Our biggest roadblock to making our trip a reality is the cost of a bus to get us to the site. Once there, we have negotiated a group rate of 9 dollars per student for admission, which we can cover with our current budget. We plan to document our experience with pictures and videos so we may share it with the other students at Robeson. The staff of the Caves will also provide us with rock and mineral samples to take home. Please helps us make this hands on learning experience a reality. We even invite you to join us for the trip. Thanks for your support! The Science in the Community Club
