We are school of youth activists! Our robust school club, GTCC (Green Team--Climate Change!), continues its quest to address Climate Change and lead our school and community in sustainability efforts. In our second year, our club goals include: solar energy investigation, increasing our voice and activity in our community, reducing school consumption and waste and "greening" our playground.
Our students are active against climate change.
They have written to local businesses and our school district about sustainability efforts, conducted classroom presentations, spoken in front of our state legislature on behalf of orca safety & clean energy, written letters to representatives about clean-energy bills and solar panel funding and organized clean-ups of local public spaces. These kids are motivated and want to do even more!
One of the biggest concerns is our school environment, including the lack of green space on our school campus. Container gardening in our first step to make our grounds more earth friendly.
My Project
Our students wish to combat climate change thru educated choices and proactive actions. Given the "concrete" nature of our playground, our efforts to "green" our playground are a bit more challenging. Thus, large container gardening!
Container gardening addresses three goals within our developing school-wide gardening curriculum: to offset heat generated by our concrete playground; to provide hands-on gardening experiences within our classrooms; and to generate curiosity and motivation towards sustainable gardening and healthy eating habits.
And we'll be able to sample our work, as well!
The kids want to lead by example, to be active and visible in our community working for change. The concerns about our school campus comes directly from the kids, as do the potential solutions. What better way to foster leadership and action than by providing them the opportunity and tools to make the changes themselves?
