Geography Impacts History - Help These Students Learn How!
My students need 15 Us & World Notebook Maps, Dry Erase Markers, as well as laminated and dry-erase maps of the United States and the World to help reinforce and practice their skills in the classroom geography center.
Help us learn our state, national, and world geography! Many of my students have lived in the same city for their entire lives, and never traveled outside the state. I'd like to show them places around the world to open up their imaginations and also help them with their geography knowledge.
I teach students with special needs in an alternative high school setting.
Many of the students have been placed in an alternative high school due to their high number of absences in past school years. Due to the amount of school they have missed, they have major gaps in their content knowledge. They struggle in Social Studies, particularly in the area of geography, which hinders their ability to understand history. Geography impacts where and why societies develop, how cultures interact with one another, and many other crucial relationships that are key in understanding the history of the world. I want to help them improve their geography knowledge and eliminate the barriers that impede their learning in the classroom.
My Project
I am planning to set up a geography center in my classroom, using the maps from this project. I want students to have a place where they can sit and immerse themselves into a United States map or a World map. I'd like them to be able to quiz themselves and their classmates by filling in the blank maps with dry-erase markers. I know giving them the resources they need to help study the map will encourage them to enhance their skills.
Donations from this project will help the students that need help the most with their basic map skills.
I want them to understand where they live, be able to locate it and other locations on the map, and also dream of other places around the world that they would like to go. I know exposure to different places around the world will foster their imaginations.
