Our classroom is like our second home. The students help each other with problems, work together on projects, and eat snacks while listening to me read to them. Even though they are fifth graders getting ready for middle school, they still thrive in a comfortable, nurturing space.
Children learn better when they feel happy, comfortable, and safe.
Our classroom environment provides this to all the students while learning and growing. Our class is composed of students from varying socioeconomic classes. Most of them arrive at 7:00 am and leave at 6:00 pm.
My Project
Students who read in class tend to continue reading at home. We are trying to make life-long learners. When kids can read a book in school, studies show they will continue reading at home independently.
Students want to read new and current books.
They have more interest in novels when it is related to what they are learning in class. The American Revolution is part of our fifth grade curriculum. Students begin to enjoy reading historical fiction once they have the background knowledge to help them understand the topic. The biographies enhance their non fiction experience and increase their knowledge with the topic.
