My Project

Hello!

I'm so excited to launch my bearded dragon breeding project this spring, but I could use the help of generous donors like you to make it happen!

As an animal scientist/teacher, I involve animals as much as I possibly can in my classroom. I currently have two bearded dragons, a leopard gecko, a coral reef tank, a saltwater tank, and an axolotl in my high school science classroom. The animals the students are most taken by are my two bearded dragons, Meleys (May-lease) and Drogon. The students absolutely ADORE these two and handle/interact with them regularly.

I have always been fascinated by genetics and ethical breeding practices. As such, I purchased my female bearded dragon, Meleys, to be a breeding match for my male, Drogon. I will be breeding the two in the spring, but instead of making this a personal endeavor, I am THRILLED that our school has been supportive of my idea to make it a class project!

In this project, we will study the genetics behind the pairing, as we can look at a real-life example of Mendelian genetics, incomplete and complete dominance, Punnett Squares, etc., as well as the ethics behind breeding and raising animals, especially exotic animals like reptiles. While I have personally purchased my reptiles themselves as well as tanks for the hatchlings, and I will be building shelving for everything, purchasing food, etc., there are still many supplies needed! The most expensive of which includes the incubator for the eggs. Bearded dragons are reptiles and need an alternative source of heat and UVB to properly absorb calcium and vitamin D for bone health, which are other things you will find on this list.

The kids are SO excited! Thank you for any donations!
