Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"They look like a flock of birds," Owen (not his real name) told us. He looked at the visual writing prompt, which showed planes in a cramped takeoff loop out of a stadium. We were supposed to "tell the story" of the impossible image. When I cocked my head and took in his simile with a murmur of approval, but looked later at his class notebook page and saw it was blank, I decided we needed to start writing bell work journals in books that looked and felt like real, personal, private journals. My students need writing spaces with a 'wow' factor.

Students vary in their receptiveness to low-consequence writing activities like daily journals, but the results I see in my classroom illustrate how much control of voice and sentence complexity comes from writing without purpose.

Fluency, confidence, and stamina come from practice, and instead of cramming daily journals around math notes and crumpled pages, I want to offer teenage writers a personal object, a journal, that looks and feels distinct from other on-paper schoolwork. Color and personalization in these journals reminds them that this is a piece of paper unlike other papers. I notice a difference every time my students feel individually valued for their actual thoughts, and I want to invest in a keepsake they can use in the classroom all year and then own. A journal doesn't want much from them, and these wise, often emotionally fragmented, and teched-out students I see need to know their unrestricted words have a home.
