Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Inspiring students to tell their own stories by authoring and illustrating their own books is my passion. I want to teach students that what they have to say matters and they can share what they write about with their families and friends.
Our school is one of the largest elementary schools in the city of Chicago.
With a population of over 1500 students in grades k-8, we are happy to boast about the fact the we have an attendance rate of over 95%. Yes, our students enjoy coming to school. Our school is designated as a Fine Arts neighborhood school with an open enrollment.
My Project
Having gelli plates in my classroom will allow me to expose my first graders to evidence base writing and visual thinking strategies (what makes you say that, what do you see, think, wonder?, etc.) I plan to use these supplies to help my students identify themes and variations, compare, contrast, create and illustrate their own stories. Using the gelli plates will allow my student to see how science and nature provide endless inspiration for art.
My students will be identifying and sorting items from nature using shapes and variety. They will make use of creative patterns by identifying and manipulating forms. Finally, we will create in-school journals for: science; language arts; math; and social studies which will be presented to each parent at the end of the school year.
Each and every child has some artistic abilities My hope is that my students will be able to use these new found skills, develop them over time, and reinforce success in other academic areas.
My students need a set of Gelli printing plates and brayers to create monoprints.
Monoprinting is a form of printmaking that is easy for all students. The gelli plates will last for years to come.
The broad impact of having gelli plates and brayers is to have my students leave my classroom with a general understanding of what it takes to generate ideas, get them down on paper and share what they have learned.
