My Students

I am a Baseball coach at a school where the athletic budget doesn't go very far. All middle schools in this county receive the same amount of funding regardless of the number of sports the school sponsors. At my school we have over 900 students and over 15 different teams that all share the athletic budget. Other schools can have half the number of students and teams and still receive the same sized budget.

Our biggest issue is where the money goes.

Over 75% of the money the Athletic Department receives from ticket sales and the the county budget goes to the cost of officials for all the sports. Since there are 15 teams each year at my school, this means there isn't much money left over from the budget or ticket sales to replenish or replace equipment over the years. A majority of the students at my school qualify for Free/Reduced lunch and many students are part of a back pack program and take food home for the weekends. As a result of this, the students who play sports for our school have to supply their own gear.

My Project

The main purpose of this project is to replenish the gear that takes a beating each day at practice. The bucket of balls will be used during practice and the helmets are for the players who aren't able to afford their own. The batting net and tee will help the team practice their hitting when we have to move practice indoors due to the rain while the water removal pump will allow us to get back on the field faster after the rain stops.

The last piece of gear is to help the old coaches, myself included, swing lighter bats during practice.

A regular bat is tough to swing for 2 hours of practice so these Fungo bats will save our backs so we can let the players keep practicing and more practice means more fun!
