Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My hard-working group of students with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism are ages 18-22 and remain in school to work on transition-related skills to prepare for adulthood. Students in my classroom go off campus daily to volunteer in vocational experiences with job coach support throughout our community, and travel throughout the state to explore various activities of recreation and leisure on a weekly basis.

Students in my transition program are actively learning how to access public transportation, such as the city bus and ADA paratransit, and we practice using these services on a daily basis to increase their independence.

When traveling in the community and practicing routines for accessing public transportation, our students utilize lanyards to keep their bus tickets in a safe and easily accessible place. Wearing lanyards also allows students to wear ID cards/name tags at their sites, and keep emergency card information on hand while they are off campus. Because the majority of our activities are community-based, students also travel with backpacks to carry their lunches, purchases, or other items they may need for their field trips. Smaller, drawstring bags make traveling on public transportation much more comfortable, especially when we're on a crowded bus!
