Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Many of my students will be transitioning from elementary into the larger more dynamic world of middle-school. The vast number of differences between elementary and middle-school can be daunting for students and parents.
In elementary, the focus is on whole-group activities whereas in middle-school we do skill-building so that our students can participate in successful end-of-unit cooperative games.
To help my incoming sixth-graders transition smoothly from elementary and into our school, I plan to use "Gator Balls" (soft, vinyl coated balls) to help them build their throwing and catching skills and to use a variety of group activities to build collaboration skills.
I will have students work in partners to throw and catch without the stress of hitting or getting hit. This will allow them to focus on skill building. Further, to leverage my students experiences, I will have them play a variety of dodging, running, and invasion games. These activities require team-work, cooperation, and tolerance to individual differences. The end result will be high-levels of collaboration in our class.
I believe by making these adjustments my students will feel more at ease since they will be experiencing several potentially stressful changes. Please help me give my students a piece of "Gator Haven."
