This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you look around our classroom, you will notice pieces of rug all over. This is because our gathering rug is falling apart. After years of use everyday, our rug is not going to make it much longer.

My students love to gather at the rug, but have been getting upset with each other when they leave because they are finding pieces of their favorite meeting place all over the classroom.

I have to remind the students that our rug is old and well loved, it will come apart, and others aren't intentionally tearing it up, it just "attached" to them while they are sitting there and gets moved to another place in the room. My students attend school in a low economic school and they take great pride in the items they have, at home and at school. They try to be as careful around the rug as possible, to not cause any more damage, but wear and tear is unavoidable, and with the age our our classroom rug, it is getting more and more difficult to not notice the ratted corners, the missing threads, and the hole in the middle of the rug.

My Project

We use our current classroom rug everyday, several times throughout the day. We gather their for our whole group reading lessons. We also meet there for small group work. When students have free choice of where to sit, a few groups always gravitate towards the classroom rug, because of the natural boundaries it provides. This rug will be used daily for a place to gather for meetings and instruction and students will not have to be upset because something they love so dearly is not torn up because of age. This rug also has the added benefit of the world being on it. Continents and oceans are standards I am required to teach and this rug will provide a great visual and hands-on place for students to learn about continents and oceans.

Having a place to gather in a classroom is very important, but having that place be an eyesore is not very comforting to my students.

I would like to provide them with a comfortable place to gather, and a place that learning can take place.
