My students are sixth graders, attending an intermediate school, in Connecticut. They come from all areas of town and are mostly from an urban setting. Most of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. In our district, funding is extremely limited, and access to resources is almost non-existent. I want my classroom to be a place where my students can comfortably learn, in a safe and exciting environment, but I also want to give them every opportunity possible to help them succeed.
My Project
After teaching for many years with desks, I've found that they just are not conducive to group work. No matter how you arrange them, the standard desks with attached chairs don't allow for students to sit comfortably and work together.
This year has been all about trying new strategies for my students and using their input to make decisions about what works best for them.
We know that one size does not fit all. That's why I want to eliminate some desks and add tables for classroom seating. With these tables, students will much more easily be able to work as a team. Since we spend most of our day in partner work, peer editing and revising, and in group discussion, it's only fitting that my students have the best space possible to work in.
These tables will encourage collaboration and make sure that everyone's voice can be heard while working.
