My students need to have one-on-one or small group instruction. A horseshoe table with a white board top, will allow the students to sit close to the teacher and receive the instruction they need.
The students in my Life Skills program are an amazing group of children. They are loving kids who give their all when given a task. Everyday things that we take take for granted, such as washing dishes or understanding a newspaper article, are a challenge for these boys and girls. In my classroom, we work on these life skills. The class also goes on outings that involve real world experiences, such as going to the grocery store to shop for ingredients for our weekly recipe.
Our goal is to prepare these students for life after graduation.
Repetition is key when working with this group of special needs students. We practice practice making a bed, using coupons, managing a checking account, and even doing laundry. These skills are practiced over and over again so they can apply them to their lives out side of school.
Not only do we work on living skills, but we work on job skills. The students fill out various job applications so they understand what it will be like to try and get a job. They practice following written and oral directions with two or more steps. We also sort items and and making change.
My Project
Students in this Life Skills classroom benefit from small group instruction, as well as one-on-one instruction. Having a horseshoe shaped table, with a whiteboard top will allow the students to work closely with each other, the teacher, and paraprofessionals. A mobile whiteboard will also allow the students to see what is being discussed during the lesson.
Students will be able to gather around the table to learn everything from everyday math skills to everyday living skills.
Being close to each other will encourage social interaction. Sitting around a table with peers and staff will also allow the students to remain on task or seek the help they need.
