This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My third grade students are amazing. They are curious about the world around them and want to make our school community a place for all to enjoy through a student led community service project. Our school is a new campus and our buildings and interiors are nice. The school planter boxes are a different story. We are in an area where there are high winds and this causes our planter boxes to be overcome by weeds!

My students are excited to continue with their community service project of beautifying our campus, one planter box at a time!

The idea was born from a class discussion in science about pollination and the importance of pollinators. While we brainstormed what we can do as a class to help the earth, someone suggested weeding the planter boxes around school. That grew to a discussion about planting seeds from our local libraries "seed library" and attracting pollinators to school. I thought it was a wonderful idea and they agreed to take responsibility of caring for the boxes this year and next as community service. They all said "YES!" and suggested we ask others from different classes to join us. To say I was impressed is an understatement!

Thanks to generous donors, our previous garden project was funded. We know have some beautiful planters, with succulents, flowers, decorations and tables and chairs. We are now in need of a place to house our items so they can last and benefit our school and students for years to come. Please know your donation will bring smiles to our students and the community and will help our earth by offering pollinators a beautiful stop as they travel and do their important jobs. As one student said, "we are helping them, so they can help us."
