This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My third grade students are amazing. They are curious about the world around them and want to make our school community a place for all to enjoy through a student led community service project. Our school is a new campus and our buildings and interiors are nice. The school planter boxes are a different story. We are in an area where there are high winds and this causes our planter boxes to be overcome by weeds!

My students are excited to begin their first community service project by beautifying our campus, one planter box at a time!

The idea was born from a class discussion in science about pollination and the importance of pollinators. While we brainstormed what we can do as a class to help the earth, someone suggested weeding the planter boxes around school. That grew to a discussion about planting seeds from our local libraries "seed library" and attracting pollinators to school. I thought it was a wonderful idea and they agreed to take responsibility of caring for the boxes this year and next as community service. They all said "YES!" and suggested we ask others from different classes to join us. To say I was impressed is an understatement!

The idea is to use the tools requested in this project to weed the planter boxes around the school. We will use the gloves and aprons to make sure we take care of our school uniforms. The soil will be spread we will plant seeds. The tools will be kept outside in the small locked deck box. The hose will be moved around the school as needed to water our seeds. The butterflies and bird bath will draw pollinators to the areas and help our school become a beautiful school who gives back to the community.
