Our preschool serves a variety of students with special needs and sensory impairments from ages 3 through prekindergarten. These needs include deaf and hard of hearing students, students with visual impairments and blindness, deafblind students and also students with multiple disabilities. Our goal is to make learning as applicable as possible. We take weekly fieldtrips and build community resources around our area. We provide sensory experiences with rich language supports in order to best facilitate learning. Having exciting, motivating learning experiences are how young children carry over new language quickly and remember it to apply and add to existing concepts.
Our students need strong supports in the area of language and concept development.
These early skills lead to later literacy success. Our goal is to provide hands on learning experiences to enhance their learning and carry over new vocabulary. We have students who communicate using spoken English, American Sign Language or even tactile sign language. The goal is for all learners to be successful and to experience learning in their most effective modality.
My Project
At our preschool, we use hands on learning opportunities to help students with special needs (deaf, hard of hearing, visual impairments, deafblindness, multiple disabilities) learn vocabulary and difficult concepts. We design special units for them to learn about these concepts in the most direct way possible using all of their senses to learn. Past units include learning about birds, airplanes, penguins, the Olympics and other sports, and various habitats in Ohio.
In this gardening unit, students will get to start their own seeds right here at the preschool on the playground!
Then we can watch them grow, learn about bees and butterflies and how they pollinate plants and connect it all back to literacy skills and reading! We will be able to touch, see, smell, and even taste our work! This is the best way to learn, through experiencing learning through all of our senses.
