Gardening with Ms. Griffin

My students need lawn rakes, round point shovels and shrub rakes to do regular clean ups of our school grounds. This leads to the students having pride in their facilities. Vandalism vanishes.

My Students

Students come into school noting trash left over from the evening before. Of course they do not take responsibility for the litter. Doing school-wide clean ups keeps them taking pride in our facility and fosters habits of using trash and recycling cans, instead of throwing trash on the ground.

Our students are very diverse.

We would like the careful habits of the most ecologically conscious students to spread. Working together on the common goal of cleaning up the grounds defines a shared goal for all. They get to know each other and respect each other by working together. We have students from different countries and cultures. Our students run the from economically disadvantaged to the children of professionals. The one thing they have in common is parents who care not just about the academics we offer but also an atmosphere that encourages respect for all individuals.

My Project

We will use these tools to do periodic whole school cleanups. As students work together to improve their school, their pride in themselves and "their" school" will grow. We will be able to get out litter caught in shrubbery and clean up wide areas. This will have more impact than picking up isolated pieces of litter on their perception of how good their school and what quantities of trash we can recycle.

As students work together on this project, they will gain respect for each other.

This will make classroom management easier, hallways less contentious and more opportunities for academic sharing. Students will learn they are agents of change. This will encourage them to be more willing to take initiative when they see a change is needed.
