My Students

We are a pod of three unique learners on an alternative pathway to high school graduation. Our gentlemen have mild intellectual disabilities and do venture out of our classroom to other courses, but we spend the remaining time together studying Basic Elements of Algebra and building independence and self-sufficiency skills. As part of our curriculum, we would like to start and maintain a container garden. This the first year we are offering this unique class at our STEAM high school, not only we are creating the course but we are slowly collecting resources to facilitate these important skills. These gentlemen will remain in these courses until graduation or age 22. They are excited to fortify their independence while building foundational knowledge in science and mathematics!

My Project

These garden supplies will be utilized on school campus with the hopes of inspiring students' to garden at home. The school and many students who attend are located in food deserts and/or experience food insecurity, actually our entire campus qualifies for the free lunch program. A working knowledge of how things grow and how to grow things will inform students about the food system and empower them to take it back! An added bonus is fresh veggies will spark a conversation to explore the impact of food on health and planet.
