My Project

Many students don’t know how to grow their own food as parents don’t have time, space or knowledge themselves to know how to do this. In my class students from kindergarten through 8th grade will have the opportunity to learn how to grow foods and turn them into a meal, how to preserve for future use and how to save seeds to grow future crops. I am so excited for the opportunity to teach this skill to these students!

We will begin by having the older students and younger students work together to plant things like lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumber and beans among as many other vegetables as possible.

Then the students will tend the vegetables until they are ripe and able to be processed whether to eat immediately, freeze or can. Students will also be taught how to preserve seeds to grow future crops!!

These items being requested will add so much to our classroom for our students knowledge of how things grow, different ways to grow food when you don’t have a large area of land to work with and how to grow food when it is cold outside. All of these are life skills few students get if their family doesn’t grow their own crops. Living in a very low income area I am hoping this will teach my students a new way to provide for themselves and their families in the future.
