Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are trying to create a garden throughout the outdoor classrooms and playgrounds at our school. We have several different areas to choose from; such as planter's boxes that can be seen from classrooms and a large open backyard type setting where wild flowers (and weeds) grow.
My students love to look at the beautiful side of the pasture, everything is green to them.
So why not take that positive energy and engage the children to develop their green thumbs and begin to overtake the wild gardens at our school? My students love to run around the planter's boxes and look into the weeds growing there while examining what is sprouting. We need to begin to take care of our outdoor environment and this project will begin to lead us in the right direction. My students love to be outside and this gardening project will bring their classroom to where they love to learn: the outdoors!
My Project
Our main task is to overthrow the weeds that are taking over and threatening our outdoor environment from the planter's boxes to our sea of wild growing plant (and weed) life. We are asking for simple materials for this project, the tools we need to dig up the weeds and soil we already have, and replace those with the seeds and bulbs listed in the project. All the items will be a part of the school community; the tools will be used for years to come and are just the right size for the students eager to get their hands on them!
This project will not only build the outdoor environment we have at our school, it will bring the community of students and teachers together in the effort to make that environment beautiful.
We will work together to create a garden of not only beautiful flowers, but of vegetables and food that will create sustenance for the community of students and their families. It will bring together those working on the garden to look forward to the future, and what we begin to grow in the meantime.
