My students need various paint brushes, canvases, marker stand, brushes, knife set, and aprons to stay clean and dry, as well as gardening gloves and a water can.
What we learn with pleasure we never forget. -Alfred Mercier
This quote relates to my project as I am trying to provide different activities to engage the senses and nurture children's innate ability to learn about the world around them.
My classroom is a busy place with many different types of children.
Each child brings a special gift to the classroom and as a teacher, it is my job to value and encourage it. Throughout the year, I want my students to be engaged, happy, and self-directed learners. My biggest challenge is getting my students to believe in themselves as thinkers, learners, and individuals.
The children I work with often come from adverse backgrounds, with low economic resources. Almost all of the children in my class have free or reduced lunch. Despite this, they are caring and inquisitive about the world around them; all children are. For many reasons, the children at my school are almost always playing a game of "catch up" when it comes to school, and as a kindergarten teacher, I try to build and environment that children can feel successful in so they know that their effort makes a difference and that learning is fun!
My Project
The requested materials will be of ongoing use in my classroom. The marker holder will replace a current basket where children have to dig for markers and caps are always getting mixed up. We will be learning about life cycles by planting some flowers and vegetables, where the gloves and watering can will come in handy. When we have grown some crops, the children will use the Curious Chef Knives to cut it up so we can cook something. We can also use the canvases, paint brushes, and aprons to paint something we've grown or something we are learning about. The materials will enhance learning in all subject areas. While cooking we can research recipes, follow the directions, and use math to measure. The children can write reflections about the process afterward. Gardening provides a chance for the children to have hands-on experiences with nature and sustainability. Art will help my students to develop observation skills, patience, and have pride in their work.
Donations to this project will help my students grow as individuals.
The children will enjoy their time in school, as the hands on experiences will excite them and help to develop a passion for learning.
