We need supplies to start a garden, and to start a composting program at our school.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
Juliana, who is in charge of the project, is a freshman with lofty aspirations. She and the rest of the students are part of a high school that is in a Middle college program. This means that their campus is on a community college, they take college classes concurrently with their high school classes, and they have the opportunity to earn their AA degree along with their diploma. They are an extremely bright, highly motivated, talented group, who come from a lower SES background. The gardening/composting club, are in charge of the project.
Juliana started the gardening/composting club because she saw an opportunity at our school for the students to learn about composting and reducing waste and decided to start a program to fill that need. This program would also have the added benefit of making rich soil in which a garden could be cultivated.
There is one main lunch area, but students eat lunch throughout the campus. We want to teach the students about composting when getting rid of their waste.
The compost materials will directly go towards providing soil for the garden we are creating.
This project will help the students understand ecological and social responsibility. It will also promote teamwork, real-life problem solving, and real-life skills when we collect compost material, manage the compost, create our garden, and maintain the garden.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to create a composting program and a school garden. We want the students to understand that there is another alternative to landfills and recycling centers. We want the students to understand what compost is, and what it can make. What better way to show them, than to have a beautiful garden as a result.
I will make the most of this leadership opportunity involved in creating this project by working on leadership skills such as organizing a team, making sure several tasks are completed, facilitating communication to the team and within the team. I will need to make sure compost materials are collected, the compost is maintained and put into the garden, and that the garden is being properly managed.
This project is important to me because I want people to know about composting and how composting works. This project will be important to the school community because it will produce a beautiful garden that they could visit, and perhaps get vegetables from. The problem we are trying to solve is the overfilling of landfills.
