This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The wonderful thing about garden-based learning is that it's a hands-on, minds-on experience where my students and I learn together. Young children are excited to get their hands dirty. In starting a garden, my students will not only get their hands dirty, they will also learn about plants.

My three- and four-year-old pre-k students are very enthusiastic learners.

We are at a Title I school with a very high percentage of students and families living in low income homes. Most of my students are English Language Learners. As their teacher, it is my job to create excitement in their daily routines at school in order to make their school experience fun and worthwhile.

My Project

I firmly believe in experiential learning. How great would it be for my students to plant their own vegetables, observe their growth, and harvest them for consumption! I can almost see the excitement in their eyes as they tackle something that adults usually work on, such as gardening. My students need a garden bed, gardening tools, knee pad, watering can, plant food, seeds and literary texts about plants and seeds to start our preschool garden. The materials I have requested will be used to start our class vegetable garden. This hand-on project will teach them how to plant seeds, nourish them and harvest for consumption. They will learn about where vegetables come from as well as their importance in keeping and maintaining healthy bodies. There is a cornucopia of knowledge that my students will learn in the areas of science (botany), social studies (crops and food production), health and nutrition (benefits of vegetables) and math (measurement, number sense, probability.)

In the words of Abigail Van Buren, "If you want children to keep their feet on the ground, put some responsibility on their shoulders." This gardening project will definitely teach my students lifelong skills that they will carry to adulthood.
