My Project
This project will teach my students the process of growing food sustainably from seed to harvest, connecting agriculture to food systems. We will go one step further in comparing growing the tomatoes and cucumbers both inside and outside a protected shade house and see which fares better. The tomato cages and cucumber trellis will be set up in two separate beds, one inside the shade house and one outside. The seeds planted will be the same for both and we will see which one produces more produce! Students will work together to plant the tomatoes and cucumbers in two separate raised beds and manage the entire growing process. They will rotate responsibilities amongst the various class periods, learning about soil health, irrigation, pest management, and harvesting. Once the tomatoes and cucumbers start producing, they will be harvested and used to prepare a meal, exploring topics of nutrition and food preparation.
Garden to Table is the new craze now, even if it has been done for centuries by all homesteaders across America.
There were no grocery stores in the olden days. This "Garden-to-Table" meal will have students share the dishes they’ve created with the tomatoes and cucumbers and reflect on the process from planting to eating. One of the major things they will be documenting will be where the vegetables grew better, whether inside the shade house, or outside. We will also discuss the importance of local food production and sustainable farming.
