My Project

The garden at our middle school has been inspiring students for ten years. We grow a large variety of produce and send it home with our students and staff. It is a free farmer's market, a living laboratory, an outdoor classroom and a thriving, healthy ecosystem.

Not only do students learn to grow their own food, they learn to respect nature and get to experience the ways in which species depend on one another for survival.

Our school backs up to a protected wetland preserve, therefore the garden plays host to many varieties of native plants, insects and animals. My students are especially enchanted with the turtles who call our garden home.

I work with most of the students in our school, however my specific focus is on students with learning difficulties and behavioral challenges. These students, especially, benefit from the bedrock that the garden provides. In the garden behavior becomes manageable and learning is experiential involvement. My students are immersed in nature. In our tech heavy, disconnected world, my students become connected with one another. They become connected with the natural, verdant earth and how the earth provides our food.

The garden at our middle school has been growing for ten years. I have been the garden coordinator here for more than eight years. Three years ago the shed that I inherited with the garden started to shake and wobble. The roof would blow off and my family and I would reattach it as best as possible. This spring the winds have been formidable. The whole shed collapsed and is now beyond repair. We are in the heart of gardening season and desperately need the shed to be replaced. Your help getting a new outdoor storage shed would be deeply appreciated by my students and myself.
